Brett Hodgson has reflected on the Black & Whites’ sensational 64-22 victory over Leigh Centurions on Saturday afternoon, praising the improvements to Hull’s attacking capabilities.

The Airlie Birds ran in twelve tries on a memorable afternoon at the Leigh Sports Village, including a hat-trick for Andre Savelio, with FC registering their highest Super League score for eight years.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, brought to you in association with Jacuzzi, Hodgson said: “We prepared exceptionally well for this game.

“We knew that because of the way Leigh performed against Catalans last weekend and almost claiming their first win, we’d need to be at our best. We shut them out completely which was very pleasing.

“We have tried to build our attacking style over the last couple of weeks. Last week was the most we have passed the ball in a long time, so we tried to show that again today. We have some attacking players that when given the right to do so, can create good opportunities for us.

He added: “The connection between our spine today was as good as it’s been, off the back of some strong performances in the forwards.”

Hodgson also praised the individual performances of several of Hull’s stars, including the influential Jake Connor who bagged a try and four assists in the performance.

“Jake is one of the best attacking players in the competition. And defensively too, the way we defend our try-line is down to his integrity as a full-back.

“We are thrilled with how he is going at the moment and these last two weeks we have seen some of his best footy.”

On Connor Wynne, who came into the side to start at centre and was one of Hull’s nine try-scorers, he added: “He was excellent. The way he defended the first set was so pleasing, and we planned that their threat was Iain Thornely and we needed to make sure we was strong against him, and Connor did a great job keeping him out.

“You don’t know which direction he’s going in, and showed that elusiveness on several occasions – he executed what he needed to do today.”

On Mitieli Vulikijapani, who made his Black & White debut, he continued: “Mitch has been training exceptionally well. He went on loan to Bradford and put in a couple of performances which we were really happy with, so we trusted that he would do a job today.

“The plan always was to get him on for the final 30 minutes, so with Jake coming off with his HIA, he got the opportunity.”
