Adam Swift has reflected on his performance in the Black & Whites Betfred Challenge Cup quarter-final victory over Wigan Warriors.

Hull’s 20-10 win saw them progress through to the semi-finals of the competition for the fourth time in six seasons, with Swift getting his name on the scoresheet for the third week in a row.

The stand-in full-back scored with the final play of the game to set up a clash against St Helens next month, with Hull now just eighty minutes away from a Wembley final.

Speaking after the match, Swift said: “I feel overwhelmed and pretty lost for words after that one. There’s not many better feelings that progressing in the Challenge Cup, and to get one over Wigan is always a pleasure.

“The boys really dug in today effort wise. I’m delighted.”

On a dramatic ending to the game, in which he scored a long-range try with the final play of the game, he added: “It was a tight ending, but every game this season is going to be gruelling and a real grind, but throughout pre-season we’ve had a real focus on putting in an eighty minute performance we showed that we’re capable of that today.

“We stayed calm after they scored, we regrouped behind the posts and went back to basics. We knew what we had to do.

“They had the overlap but they couldn’t execute and luckily I was just on hand to break away and score.

“There is nothing better than scoring tries, that’s what I’m paid to do, but the result is the most important aspect today.”

In the absence of Jake Connor, Swift featured at full-back for the Airlie Birds – a position he hasn’t played in for a decade.

“I haven’t played at full-back since 2011 for Whitehaven, but I’ve trained there all week after getting the nod so I had plenty of time to prepare, but I think I did a decent job there. It’s another string added to the bow.

“It was a bit of a surprise. I’ve filled in at full-back in training before, but Brett was confident in me. For me to get the nod meant I had to take my opportunity with both hands when there are plenty of other talented boys who could have slotted in there.”

Looking ahead to next week’s game and the return of supporters to the KCOM Stadium, he continued: “I’m absolutely buzzing. These grounds aren’t the same without the atmosphere with fans bring. With us having near to 6,000 fans in next week, it’s going to be a real belter.”
