Google Celebrate Clive Sullivan’s Birthday With Doodle

Google are celebrating what would have been Clive Sullivan’s 78th birthday with his very own ‘Doodle’!

Club News

Today would have been club legend Clive Sullivan’s 78th birthday, and Google are helping us celebrate the life of one if Rugby League’s all-time biggest icons by designing Clive’s very own ‘Doodle’!

Great Britain’s first ever black captain (in any professional sport), and the ultimate legend on both sides of the River Hull making a combined 553 appearances for both Hull FC and Hull KR, Sullivan broke down barriers throughout his career.

The Cardiff-born ‘Welsh Wizard’ became one of the sport’s most-feared wingers in a career than spanned the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, scoring over 370 career tries, with 250 coming in the Black & White colours of Hull FC making him the club’s all-time top try-scorer.

Clive sadly passed away aged 42 in 1985 having suffered from liver cancer.

Such was Clive’s influence on the city of Hull, the main route into the city was renamed in his honour, Clive Sullivan Way, while the two clubs still compete for the Clive Sullivan Trophy every season across their league derby matches.

A Google Doodle is a special, temporary alteration of the logo on Google’s homepages intended to commemorate holidays, events, achievements, and notable historical figures, with Clive being today’s celebrated figure!

Sullivan’s ‘Doodle’ will be seen by millions of people across the UK throughout April 9th: to put that into some perspective, across the world, Google received 63,000 searches per second on any given day, which translates to 5.6 billion searches per day – a significant amount of these take place in the UK, all seeing Clive’s ‘Doodle’ today!
