Brett Hodgson has reflected on last night’s defeat to reigning Betfred Super League reigning champions St Helens.
The Black & Whites went down 34-16 at the Totally Wicked Stadium after an impressive performance from Kristian Woolf’s side.
Speaking after the match, Hodgson said: “It was a tough night – when you’re playing against St Helens, you need to start the game well, and be strong and physical in the contacts, and they seemed to want that more than us in those early stages.
“The kick-off that went out on the full set the tone unfortunately. It showed that we weren’t where we needed to be.
“We didn’t get enough attacking chances. We managed to score some points in the second-half when we got into good field position, but in the first-half we only got there once. We defended too much because of our own errors throughout the game.”
When asked if the short turnaround from last week’s game against Leeds contributed as a factor in the defeat, Hodgson added: “That’s a reason we probably weren’t at our best but we can’t use that as an excuse.”
However Hodgson explained that his side must take some positives out of the performance to ensure that his side can compete with the Saints in next week’s Betfred Super League semi-final clash.
“We have to make sure we take some positives out of today to ensure we are in a good mindset.
“We need to make sure we learn the lessons from this performance when we go into next week’s semi-final.
“We can’t put in a performance like that next week – we need to work harder and show what we have done in recent weeks to get a result next Saturday.”
