Match Report: Hull FC 17-10 Huddersfield Giants

Hull battle to victory over Huddersfield.

Club News

A depleted Black & White outfit recorded arguably their hardest fought victory of the season so far as they defeated Huddersfield 17-10 on their return to the KCOM Stadium.

Hull claimed their first win in front of their home fans since February 2020 against all the odds, having a host of first-team stars unavailable due to injuries and international call-ups.

Being 10-0 down at the break, second-half tries from Mahe Fonua, jack Logan and Connor Wynne secured an important win for Brett Hodgson’s side.

Team News

The Black & Whites went into the game with 14 players unavailable, including Adam Swift, Danny Houghton and Jordan Lane who all dropped out of the squad late.

Jake Connor, Andre Savelio and Chris Satae were all unavailable through international duty, with Hull therefore naming academy players Aidan Burrell and Marcus Walker for the first time.

Jack Logan made his first appearance since returning to the club on loan, while Mitieli Vulikijapani made his first start.

The Match

The Giants opened the scoring after eight minutes, making the most of a mistake from young full-back Connor Wynne; failing to deal with a high ball close to the in-goal area, Ashall-Bott claimed the loose-ball to touch down.

Huddersfield extended their lead with seventeen minutes played with Russell knocking over a penalty goal from the 30 metre line.

Ian Watson’s men made it a ten point advantage with 13 minutes remaining in the half, with the boot of Russell once again the provider of the two points.

Half-Time: Hull FC 0-10 Huddersfield

Hull had to wait 50 minutes before their first try in the game, when a quick move to the left edge saw Mahe Fonua power through into space to touch down. Sneyd missed the conversion attempt.

The Airlie Birds would draw level with 25 minutes left on the clock, as Jack Logan rose the highest to collect a cross-field kick from Marc Sneyd and touch down on his return to the KCOM Stadium. Sneyd added the goal on this occasion.

As Hull hit their straps, FC took the lead for the first time in the game with just 19 minutes remaining. Sneyd was once again the provider, as a grubber into the in-goal was fumbled by a Giants man, and Connor Wynne had the pace to touch down under the posts. Sneyd’s kick made it a six point lead.

And it was Sneyd once again who helped secure victory, with a drop-goal directly in front of the posts with four minutes to play.
