Brett Hodgson has refused to make excuses for his side’s disappointing performance against Huddersfield Giants on Thursday evening.
FC’s return to action after a month without a game didn’t go to plan at the John Smith’s Stadium, with the Giants claiming at 40-26 victory.
Hull, who suffered their first defeat in the league since May, managed to get over the try-line five times, including a brace from Mitieli Vulikijapani, but the West Yorkshire side proved too strong on the night.
Speaking after the game, Hodgson said: “It was a very disappointing performance – we prepared very well coming into this match but we weren’t willing to apply enough pressure, and our set finishes weren’t what they needed to be.
“Our discipline let us down throughout the game.
“We don’t have any excuses though; we were just beaten by the better team on the night.
He added: “We were fresh going into the game but we didn’t execute and play to the plan we practiced, and ultimately we were way off today.”
And Hodgson explained that he and his coaching staff must now look at their defensive preparations in training ahead of next week’s clash against Leeds.
“We were way off defensively so we need to have a look at how we prepared this week going into next week’s game against Leeds – we know what it takes to defend well but we just weren’t able to show that tonight.”
Hodgson though did have praise for Vulikijapani, who scored his first two tries for the Black & Whites on the night.
“Mitch had some strong involvements and was rewarded with a couple of tries, including one which featured a brilliant bit of skill in the air to beat Jermaine McGillvary.
“He is still learning his craft but it was a decent hit-out for him.”
