Tex Hoy has explained how excited he is to get started with Hull FC after the club announced the 22-year-old has signed a two-year deal earlier today.
The Newcastle Knights playmaker will join the Black & Whites ahead of the 2023 campaign, becoming the club’s second signing for next season after Jake Trueman put pen to paper with the Airlie Birds earlier this month.
Hoy, who made his first-grade debut against Penrith Panthers in 2020, spoke to hullfc.com for the first time today, explaining how excited he is to be making the move to East Yorkshire.
“I’m really excited! Obviously, it’s a big move for me to be coming over from Australia, but it was a decision I made purely down to how excited I was to come,” he said.
“It’s a huge opportunity for me to play some footy, whilst being able to grow as a player and a person.
“I’ve heard that Hull is a big rugby league city and I know that there are two teams that hate each other there.
“Mark O’Meley coaches me at NSW Cup level and as soon as he found out about Hull’s interest, he gave me a nudge and told me how much I would enjoy it.”
The 22-year-old has made a handful of appearances for the Knights in the NRL this season, deputising at fullback for Queensland representative number one Kalyn Ponga.
But Hoy can also operate in the halves, adding some ball-playing versatility to the Black & Whites’ 2023 roster.
In his exclusive interview with hullfc.com, Hoy said: “I’ve not really spoken in too much depth about which particular role I will be playing in at the club in 2023, but I’ve had experience playing at fullback and halfback.
“If I had a preference, I’ve probably played a bit more at fullback. That’s pretty much where I’ve played in the NRL. But I’ve played at halfback and at five-eighth a few times, so I’m pretty easy on where I play.”
Hoy has struck up a positive relationship with Ponga not just on the field, but off it as well.
“Ever since I met Kalyn we bonded really well. We’re good mates outside of footy as well – we’ve got similar interests.
“Unfortunately he’s a Queenslander, so we all hate him for that, especially after Origin last week! But you can’t deny his talent and it’s been good to be at the same club as him because he’s taught me a couple of useful things.”
Hull fans will be excited for what lies ahead in 2023, with the confirmed signings of Hoy and Jake Trueman set to play alongside Jake Connor, who, before a knee injury, had accumulated 24 try assists.
“As soon as I heard about Hull’s interest, I did a little bit of research and Jake Connor looks like a really crafty player,” Hoy said.
“He always seems to be able to put people over the line, so that’s exciting looking forward to playing alongside him.
“I’ve seen a few highlights packages of Jake Trueman. He looks like a very crafty player, too. He’s the same age as me, so that will be a pretty exciting time building with him.
“I’m excited to meet them and the rest of the boys and I can’t wait to rip into training when I get over to England.”
