Kirby, who made his senior Hull FC debut away to Salford Red Devils earlier in the summer, explained how the Sports College has worked so well for him over the last 24 months.

“Going to the Sports College has left me in a position where I can go to university if I want to, but it has also given me so much education about looking after the body, nutrition, recovery and all kinds of stuff that an athlete needs to know.

“Not only that, but one of the key things I’ll take away from the Sports College is the friendships and bonds I have made during my time there.

“It’s the perfect environment for somebody who wants to have a crack at making it in Rugby League, both on and off the field.

“The tutors have been amazing in terms of planning college sessions around training schedules. A lot of where I am today stems from the environment I’ve been fortunate enough to have been a part of for the last couple of years.”

His Hull FC team mate, Jack Charles, has also been carrying out his studies over the last two years.

Although he has played several times in Super League this season, Charles is also still eligible to play for the Black & Whites’ Under 18s side in the Academy Championship.

Many of his comrades in that Under 18s side are also students at the Sports College, and Charles feels that it was important to be around so many people he is familiar with.

“I spent a lot of time with some of the lads because we would train together and also do our college sessions together, which created a great bond between us all,” he said.

“I really enjoyed my time at the college and I’m buzzing to have passed with a distinction.

“I couldn’t recommend it enough for somebody who has aspirations to become a professional Rugby League player because of the things you learn and the facilities you have on your doorstep.”
