Having skippered Hull FC Women to Grand Final glory on Sunday, Charlie Lawson says winning the title means “everything” to the whole team.

Hull came from behind to defeat Fryston Warriors 26-18 at the Millennium Stadium at the weekend, securing promotion back to the Women’s Championship at the first time of asking.

At just the age of 18, Lawson captained the Hull FC Women’s outfit that took on Fryston, and she has expressed her delight as celebrating success at such a young age.

“Winning this means everything to us. We’re the first Hull FC Women’s team to win a title, so we’re all a part of history now,” Lawson said.

“I’m so proud of everybody because it was such a huge effort. There were some moments where we got a bit panicked and sort of allowed them a way back into the game in the second-half, but we showed what we’re about and pulled clear in the end.

“We all had a belief that we were going to be okay, but I guess there’s always that small feeling of doubt in the back of your mind when you’re up against it. The way we turned the game back around was really impressive and that’s all thanks to everybody’s hard work.”

The story of the season has very much been a positive one for Hull FC’s Women, losing just four games all season.

There have been some key highlights, including Evie Sexton’s five-try performance in Sunday’s Grand Final, which mirrors her debut appearance, when she also crossed for five tries.

Having grown up playing Rugby League alongside Sexton, Lawson believes that she is a figure other young girls can look up to.

“She’s a role model. She really is. For younger girls wanting to come into the game, they can really look up to Evie and what she’s achieved,” she said.

“There are so many great stories within the team. I think it’s the fact that so many of us have come through the system as girls players and then come up to the Women’s team. I hope that can inspire a lot of other young girls who want to play Rugby League.

“I’m also really pleased for Jack [Coates]. I’ve known him for a few years now and I’m just so happy for him. He’s worked so hard and he’s stuck with the team through thick and thin, so he’s deserved the opportunity to celebrate this.”
