As the Week of Social Impact continues, we bring you Bailey’s story – a young adult who is now employed by the Hull FC Community Foundation after earning volunteering qualifications.
A former student of Hull FC’s burgeoning Sports College, Bailey furthered his education by undertaking some of the Community Foundation’s volunteering courses.
Speaking to hullfc.com, he explained how he came to find the opportunity.
“It was about a year and a half ago that I heard there were some volunteering opportunities with Hull FC so I was excited to get stuck into it,” he said.
“Whilst I was doing some volunteering, I was sent out to some of the Community Foundation’s partner schools to deliver PE lessons alongside some of the community coaches, so it was great to be able to pick up little bits from watching them.
“Another opportunity that I had whilst I was volunteering was the chance to work on Hull FC’s home match days.
“So it would be things like setting up the pitch with all of the branding like metre markers and pitch flags. I would also help the kids taking part in Magic Moments with where to stand when holding the flags. It was all a great experience.”
Bailey worked hard and committed a lot of time whilst he was volunteering with the Community Foundation.
But the hard work and dedication towards becoming a sports coach paid off.
“Recently I was offered a paid role here with Hull FC, and so far it’s been amazing,” he said.
“I’ve been able to use what I have learned from everyone around me. I just feel as thought I made the most of my time whilst volunteering and that has helped me out so much.
“It was a massive learning experience and one that I thoroughly enjoyed. I can’t recommend it enough to people who want to get involved in working in sport.
“As time goes on, I’d love to be able to stay here with Hull FC. The end goal for me is to a sports coach, but for now, I’d just like to keep learning and developing my skills.”
