Simon Grix has reflected on his side’s defeat to Huddersfield Giants on Friday night.

The Black & Whites went down 24-18 at the John Smith’s Stadium, with a late spirited fightback not enough to earn the two points.

Speaking after the game, he said: “It came down to the taking of chances. In our first set down there, we poked through the line, but then we came up with a poor kick to finish it. When we did challenge them and get through the line, we couldn’t get the pass away.

“It’s all if’s, but’s, and maybe’s, of course, but I’m pleased with some aspects. We improved in some areas and asked some questions. They did perform pretty well tonight and it wasn’t just the ending of the game for us; we tried earlier on as well.

“The difference between the teams was the end of sets. We let them out, and they were kicking and putting us deep in our own half. They won that territory battle, and we didn’t get enough shape in our kicks, but we certainly did play how we practiced in parts, and we tried to challenge the defence of Huddersfield. We asked plenty of questions, and we broke the line a few times. We just couldn’t get anything, and things didn’t go our way.

“There were also plenty of good things in the game, and I’m proud of their effort in spite of that adversity. It was a step forward, but we’re still not going home happy. We’re not winning, but that’s the closest we’ve been for a while.”

Reflecting on the performance of Logan Moy, who scored his first senior try, Grix added: “Seeing him get over for a try was brilliant, and the boys celebrated that with him. That was a big moment for him, but I thought he was tough as well.

“They put him under that spot and tried to make life hard for him, but I thought he made life quite hard for them as well with his kick returns at times.

“I won’t go down the lines of justifying the selections or anything like that, but we knew Moy would do a good job for us, and he did. We’ve got another week worth of training before we start looking at the next game. Wakka could be back in the frame for that.”

“We can only pick 17, and we need to look at everyone. That’s part of this year. There’s been that much change, but we want to get some wins on the board and change some things about ourselves, whether that’s perception or whatever, but for us on the coaching side, we want to have a look at everyone and see what everyone is about and who are the ones who are going to take us forward into next season and beyond. Moy is certainly one of those prospects.”
