Simon Grix has previewed Sunday’s Betfred Super League Round 21 clash against Leigh Leopards at the Leigh Sports Village.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Grix said: “Our older lads need to drag those younger lads along and help them through those tough bits. We need to see that this week.

“Again, if we’re judging this lot just on the scoreboard, we’re going to be shooting them for a while, maybe, based on the opposition we’ve got in front of us. I just want to see that effort and togetherness. There will be tough periods in these games.

“Once Leigh get going quick with Ipape, Amone, Mulhern, Dwyer, they can make the game really hard for you, so we need to counter that with our effort and make sure that we are together. We need to leave it all out there. I would like the older boys in the group to lead that.

“The game is very quick and against Saints, the numbers don’t lie, they ran for more metres, so physically we got outmuscled by a big pack. If you stood the teams next to each other, you can see why. That doesn’t make it acceptable. We need to be better and stand up to that physical contest. If we give it everything, then we give ourselves a chance.”

On the Leopards, Grix added: “I think the lads who are coming here will want to do a good job and show the Hull fans what they’re getting, but also show their teammates and their club that they are still behind that badge for now.

“They’re a good team, Leigh. They attack better than most. They’ve got some quality in Asiata and Lam both back on the pitch together. It makes them dangerous.

“But they’ve got their dramas too. Playing on Tuesday night has hopefully taken a bit out of them. They’re a good team and a bit of a dark horse. They’re in that fight and I’m sure they’ll make a go of it.”

He continued: “We’ll have to be really good, look after the ball, and try to make it an energy game. For them, I’ll imagine they’ll come out wanting to start fast and see how they go with that. We’ll just prepare and look after ourselves, and try the best with what we’ve got and see where it takes us.”

“It’s tough for us. They’re learning on the run. There’s no excuses and no one cares. We’ve just got to get on with it and stick together.”
