An emotional Evie Sexton refused to take all of the credit in the aftermath of Hull FC Women winning the League One Grand Final yesterday afternoon, despite scoring all five tries.

The Hull FC Women’s Player of the Year, who has also been nominated for the Women’s League One Player of the Year award, has notched up an incredible 36 tries in 15 games in her debut season at open age Rugby League, having progressed through the club’s Girls Rugby League programme.

She scored all five of Hull FC’s tries as they defeated Fryston Warriors 26-18 in the Grand Final yesterday, including a first-half hat-trick that put the Black & Whites in the driving seat.

The victory takes Hull FC’s Women’s team back up to the Championship from League One.

Speaking to hullfc.com in the immediate aftermath of the game, she said: “It feels really good. I’m so emotional and I know that I’m going to start crying talking about it, but the feeling right now is really, really good.

“It’s been an absolutely amazing year. I’ve loved playing every single minute.

“Having the girls around you all of the time is absolutely amazing and I couldn’t ask for a better team to be involved with.”

Her five-try haul mirrors the opening day of the season for Hull FC, when she made her open age debut for her hometown club, scoring five tries in a comprehensive victory over Wakefield Trinity.

The tries have flowed all season for Sexton, one of the sport’s shining young talents at present.

She has even made three appearances for Betfred Women’s Super League outfit York Valkyrie this year.

But after her standout performance of the year, a very humble Sexton was not willing to take all of the credit

“It’s not all about me. It was absolutely a full team display. There were some big moments during that game where we had to get stuck in and help each other out and we came through those moments really well together,” she said.

“Everyone was on it. I don’t think you could single out one player who didn’t play well. We stepped up for the occasion massively.

“And we’re still a really young team. A day like this is going to do so much for our confidence and belief. As we all get older, we will take the experience of this game forwards with us.”
